Journal Prompts to Explore Your Lineage

The word “lineage” is my 2022 word of the year! Exploring my own lineage has been fruitful and influences part of my work and my own spiritual path.

Use these prompts to explore yours! Copy/paste them into your own document or you can download my PDF which has interactive text blocks to type in.

  • What were the beliefs of my ancestors? Do I value and accept these beliefs?

  • What is inherited or carried within my lineage? What feels like a gift and what looks like a curse?

  • What are the traumas of my generation? Or my parent’s generation? Or my grandparent’s generation? How can I break these cycles?

  • How has trauma been passed onto me?

  • What is my birthright? What do I want to pass down through my own lineage?

  • What barriers or challenges does my community face with breaking down generational trauma?

  • Who told me to be quiet when I was honest? Who or what shut me up when my truth was too inconvenient for the family or for the culture at large?

  • Who in my family life lied to themselves in order to keep peace or survive or some other reason but as a result left me and my safety in a precarious position?

  • What messages did the world tell me about how someone like me should act, be or not be and how did that messaging encourage me to be dishonest with myself?
