Recently I shared an archived story from April 3, Recently I shared an archived story from April 3, 2019: a back and forth between my mentor, Jessica Ishikawa, and I. That was the last day I saw her in person and the last time I saw her face.

She hired me at my first job. We had this instantaneous connection. She kickstarted my career in the nonprofit industry.

We always playfully labeled me as her protégé, but it’s more than just a joke, it’s true. Of the few people she’s ever managed & mentored, I’m honored that she bestowed so much invaluable knowledge in me.

Everything I know about the work I do for my clients, which are primarily health and disease related causes, starts with Jess.

One day, the woman who initially hired Jess, at the organization we worked at, came with an offer of a lifetime: she asked Jess to join her at a new organization called @weareshatterproof, that a man named Gary founded in honor of his son, Brian, whom he lost to the devastating disease of addiction.

Jess and I parted ways in 2015. Not long after, and in the most traumatizing of ways, she was diagnosed with cancer. She called me personally to tell me and from that day forward, I prayed every. Single. Day. That I would have the opportunity to work with her again.

A few months after that April 2019 IG story was posted, my prayers were answered.

Every day I wake up reminded that I prayed for this. I got to spend the last 4 months of her life working with her at Shatterproof.

Cancer was unkind to Jess since diagnosis. She fought so damn hard for every minute of her life until she lost her battle.

My love and appreciation for Jess is profound which is why I’ve continued to worked closely with Shatterproof. Not only to live out her legacy and her personal connection to the cause, but because I believe in Shatterproof’s mission.

I’m honored to be emceeing their Virtual 5K Live Kick Off Event happening tomorrow at 4pm PST.

If you’re curious about the work Shatterproof is doing or want to learn more about addiction, which is a TREATABLE DISEASE, I hope you’ll join the live event (link in bio). It’s going to be an inspiring and uplifting one.
Out of 4 daughters in the family, we all range fro Out of 4 daughters in the family, we all range from fair to dark on the spectrum of skin color. Compared to my sisters, my mother has always particularly criticized MY brownness (among other things) and has gone as far as tricking me into using whitening soaps.

In a recent conversation about Asian beauty standards, I came to realize that she put me on an outrageous pedestal that went above and beyond what my other siblings had to go through.

It never dawned on me, until that conversation, how these passive aggressive methods, brought forth by my own mother, directly affected how inadequate I’ve felt about being attractive to other men.

It always just felt like, in her eyes, that I COULD HAVE been the whole package, if only she could fix how curvy I was, how curly I was, and how colored I was.

That I was beautiful, but I was never going to be beautiful ENOUGH.

Conversations like these are especially what we need right now as #StopAAPIHate continues to shed light on the cultural nuances and complexities our communities face.

I hope you’ll join me this Thursday, 4/15 at 9am PST for a conversation on #colorism and why unity in #AAPI communities is needed now more than ever. Link to RSVP is in my bio.
“You’re so addicted to earning the attention o “You’re so addicted to earning the attention of others because you don’t believe that you deserve it just by your existence alone.”

I read this recently & it hit a nerve which is when I knew it’s something I need to actively work on.

Instead of chasing and controlling, I’m relaxing and attracting.

Is this something you’re working on unlearning too?

*TRIGGER: SEXUAL ASSAULT* Last May, I read *TRIGGER: SEXUAL ASSAULT*

Last May, I read this from a fellow Asian American woman: “I wanted to make sure you all were consciously aware of the fact that the entire world is out to destroy us and control us. You must constantly & actively fight to retain a sense of your worth and to love yourself.”

I agreed with it then & it feels so true now.

If you’re not aware of the existence of anti-Asian racism, or the insane rise in violence towards Asians since the pandemic, you need to broaden your network. It has been present for a long time, ignored & minimized.

Hypersexualization plays a huge part in the violence we face.

I’ve been told I should take it as a “compliment” that I’m sexually preferred.

That I should be “flattered” that men use my Asianness as a litmus test by asking “Where are you from/What are you” as a lead in to ask me out on dates.

When I was 7, I was sexually abused by 2 cousins & I share this trauma with another sibling.

Since 11, I’ve had multiple unwelcome sexual encounters from strangers & people I thought were my family.

In my 20s, I experienced 2 other forms of sexual assault, forced by strangers & people I thought I could trust.

Asian women experience a very specific form of misogyny & sexism linking to the ongoing perpetuation of stereotypes around us being exotic, submissive & a fetish.

These stereotypes create a perception that we are less of a threat & easier to take advantage of because we aren’t going to fight back. That we are easily manipulated & supremely tolerant.

The misogyny of Asia regards intrinsic worth where girls are less valued & underinvested. The misogyny of the West objectifies & marginalizes us.

We are stereotyped, belittled & gaslighted. We are seen as prizes to be conquered & a potential fulfillment of people’s fantasies no matter where we turn.

Many of the denials I’m seeing around anti-Asian racism & the microaggressions we endure are echoes of archaic beliefs that uphold the model minority myth or feed into fetishizing of Asian women.

We can’t call ourselves anti-racists until we acknowledge all marginalized communities, including Asian Americans.
