Interior Designer Profile: Robert Frank

Another interior designer whose showcase room I look forward to previewing at the Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts is that of Robert Frank. Inspired by the Southern California lifestyle with influence and knowledge of original Cape Cod interior design, his aesthetic penchant is a harmonious blend of traditional and contemporary design that perfectly meets the needs of many of Southern California’s historic properties.

“In all of my projects I contrast textures, fabrics, colors and finishes in an effort to make each space unique and beautiful yet functional and comfortable. My goal is to use my knowledge of furniture, textiles and finish materials so I can specify furnishings and finishes that will be functional in design and timeless in style,” Robert adds.

He considers himself to be a very “hands-on designer” staying actively involved in practically every aspect of each of his client’s projects. With more than 28 years of experience as a designer, his full-service interior design firm specializes in interior design, kitchen design and bath design.

Robert Creates The Perfect Living Room In Three Steps

My design style is generally bright, casual, and comfortable. To achieve this in our [Showcase] space, here is what I did:
1. Specified a light color palate to keep the room bright and fresh;
2. Used natural, textural fabrics, like linens and cottons, that are easy to care for and natural fibers, like jute, grasscloth and seagrass;
3. Designed furniture that is beautiful, but still very comfortable. This means that seating is deep and generously cushioned with down fill for extra plushness and the maximum in comfort.

Robert’s Philosophy On The Living Room

I think it’s important that the living room is actually used. In many client homes, the living room goes unused because the family spends much of their time in the kitchen or family room. I feel that the living room should be multi-purpose, a place to entertain as well as place for the family to hang out to watch television, play games, to read a book, or just to have a relaxing conversation.

Robert Shares A Sneak Peek

An integral part of most of Robert’s projects is his custom millwork. Having the resource of the firm’s own cabinetry shop has been an invaluable asset, allowing design flexibilities and utilizing internal resources to build and install the firm’s custom millwork, which includes cabinetry, paneling, custom moldings and other creations.

With so many years of experience working in the design industry providing custom millwork, it is a natural fit that Robert will now be producing a custom furniture line at his own shop to be opened later this year. The photos above and below are sample renderings of some of the functional and fresh pieces Robert will soon be offering to help achieve a timeless yet classic space at home.
