In a world where many of the items available to us are mass-produced at affordable prices, it can be easy to assume that things created in smaller quantities or by human hands are pricey. Fortunately, that is not the case. As mentioned before, I am always on the hunt for unique, one-of-a-kind items especially when it comes to fashion and home goods and I love to use Etsy as a source for shopping.

Today’s post features Jeanne Chung, interior designer and founder/owner of Cozy Stylish Chic, who shares the common misconceptions and real-time benefits of ordering custom designed pieces.

Myth: “Custom” is closely associated with higher prices. It is the complete opposite! Today’s technology makes it possible, more than ever, to allow custom prints and colors to incur the same charges as standard color. The positive difference? You can achieve a look that is uniquely yours. Digital printing is a fine example of how opportunities are molding interior design today.

Jeanne shares, “Wallpaper and floor tiles are two of the products that offer on-demand digital printing. I will be using digitally printed wood floor tiles in my room for the Showcase House and visitors will be able to see the impact a custom product can make in a room.”

How custom is “custom?” Sometimes that can simply mean adjusting minor bits and pieces of an existing style to tailor to your exact needs. Perhaps it is a piece of furniture you have spotted at a showroom. The one presented may not do for your space, but the reality is, as Jeanne spills, “Many manufacturers who specialize in custom work can adjust any of their existing styles (length, height and color) at a minimal cost, but you can achieve a space that looks totally custom that you would not otherwise be able to do.”

As of late, there has been a surge of companies that offer “build your own” products. It could start with something as simple as a chair design, then ordering fields will ask customers to choose from a range of wood finishes, fabric types and colors and all other varieties of ending touches to perfect that custom look. The best part: it will not break the bank!

Another example that Jeanne gives, “Nowadays plumbing manufacturers offer a number of finishes, even though the consumer tends to gravitate to what is safe: nickel, brass, chrome.”

Seating furniture is perhaps one of the greatest and necessary examples of why thinking beyond basics is so crucial before investing. Although things may tend to look the same on the outside, not all sofas are created equal on the inside. For example, cushion preferences include: comfort-down, ultra-crown and spring-down. Each individual filling provides a different experience which should mirror the choice of fabric per consideration of lifestyle.

Jeanne provides an insider’s tip on this by saying, “If you have an active home with children and pets, selecting an upholstery with high double rubs and perhaps Crypton technology would be best than taking whatever is on the showroom floor. Off the showroom floor might look great for the first few months, but the right fabric and inner construction will stand the true test of time.”
