MERRY CHRISTMAS BABY

What began as an R&B Christmas standard written by Lou Baxter and Johnny Moore and originally recorded in 1947 by Johnny Moore’s Three Blazers, featuring the singer and pianist Charles Brown, has evolved into a classic song covered by many, many artists along the way. Versions of this entirely bluesy record have been renditioned by legendary male artists including Otis Redding, B. B. King and Ray Charles, but today’s Jazz Bar Intimacy Records post features the version of the song I was initially introduced to back in 2000 by female pop soul singer, Christina Aguilera.

Aguilera’s version of Merry Christmas Baby features Malcolm John “Mac” Rebennack, better known by the stage name Dr. John. This dynamic track is unlike most other renditions of the song, in that it stayed true to the bluesy tone of the definitive original while also adding dimension with a male and female duet. Since the introduction to this timeless song nearly 16 years ago, Merry Christmas Baby remains as one of my favorite holiday songs to enjoy especially when sitting near the fire place and hope you can enjoy the same too…

More music.
